This is the candidate Trump is now propping up with attack ads calling Talarico “High Tax” rather than running on Paxton’s own record. That choice is itself an argument: if Paxton’s résumé were an asset, MAGA Inc. would be selling it, not burying it under opposition messaging about his opponent.

What This Really Tests

The conventional read is that this is about saving one Senate seat. The more accurate read is that it’s a referendum on whether Trump’s endorsement can override a candidate’s own toxicity. Trump personally pushed Paxton past John Cornyn in the primary, and Cornyn spent months warning primary voters about exactly the scandals now haunting the general election.
